ELECTROLYSIS FAQ

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a safe and proven method of permanent hair removal and is ideal for all skin and hair types.  Electrolysis is effective because it permanently destroys the growth cells of the hair follicle, preventing treated hairs from growing back from the source. Electrolysis treatment generally consists of an electrologist inserting a very fine needle (usually thinner than the hair being treated) into the natural opening of the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft. A tiny current is then applied to destroy the hair growth cells. The current produces heat along the probe, targeting and destroying the stem cells and the papilla responsible for hair growth. Modern medical electrolysis devices can destroy the hair growth cells with chemical energy, heat energy, or both. The method chosen by the electrolysis is the modality. All are effective, and deliver permanent results. At Tarzana, we offer all three modalities.

What areas can I treat with electrolysis?

Electrolysis works on all skin and hair types, ranging from fine and lightly colored hair to darker and more course hair. It can be applied to most facial and body parts, including eyebrows, chin, upper and lower lip, jaw line and sides of the face, breast, underarms, abdomen, bikini line, feet, legs, and back. The most common areas are listed below, but by no means exhaustive.

What can I expect during treatment?

Generally, an electrolysis session can range between 15 minutes to an hour depending on the area and follicle. During treatment, you will likely feel a momentary heat sensation or pinch, but you should not feel the insertion of the probe into the hair follicle, nor should you feel like the hair is being pulled out when it is removed; the hair will usually slide out of the follicle when properly treated. Discomfort is minimal for most people, but individual tolerances vary greatly. Keep in mind that some areas of the body are much less sensitive than others. Many people read, listen to music or even take a nap while being treated. If there is a more sensitive area, we offer a variety of topical numbing agents for your comfort.

How long are electrolysis treatments?

Factors such as hair growth cycles, the quantity and structure of hair presented, previous use of temporary hair removal methods, heredity, hormone function, certain medications and stress influence the treatment program for each individual. However, most people who follow the recommended treatment plan can expect to be done between six to eighteen months.

What is the aftercare?

Immediately following treatment, you may experience slight redness or tenderness (which usually subsides on its own). During the initial 24 hours following treatment, it’s best to avoid activity that could irritate hair follicles such as excessive sweating, tanning and prolonged sun exposure or make-up application.

Why is Electrolysis more effective than other methods of permanent hair removal, such as laser hair removal?

First, Laser hair removal treatment is considered permanent reduction by the FDA. Thus, methods such as laser only reduces the appearance and thickness of hair, but is not a permanent solution to unwanted hair. Electrolysis is the ONLY method of permanent hair removal approved by the FDA. Secondly, unlike electrolysis, laser is not ideal for all skin tones and hair types. Since laser technology operates on the principle of identifying and targeting melanin, the pigment in hair and skin, laser is difficult, if not impossible on lighter hair, such as gray and blonde, and on mid to darker skin tones. Hence, its effectiveness is far more limited and requires an individual either have fair skin or that hair be of a darker hue like brown, black, or brownish-red.
